FMX Applications

Digestate

Anaerobic digestion is a sustainable and cost-effective method of converting organics into renewable energy biogas, but traditionally this technology has not provided a solution for capturing the nutrients trapped in organic wastes.

Tightening regulations have restricted land application as accumulated nutrients in the soil have been linked to surface and groundwater contamination. Worldwide, a race is underway to find new treatment technologies that allow biogas plants to recover nutrients while meeting regulations.

Using newly developed membrane technologies, BKT is now able to transform nuisance digestate streams into concentrated fertilizer products. By coupling this technology with traditional anaerobic digestion, it’s now possible to harness the full benefit of your organic waste by capturing energy, nutrients, and clean reusable water.

Our FMX anti-fouling membrane platform is specifically designed to handle high-solid, high-density, and high-viscosity anaerobic digestor effluent. Using vortex-generating technology, FMX maintains membrane performance while filtering the most difficult digestates, including manures from dairy and hog farms, poultry litter, crop and food processing waste, rendering wastewater.

FMX pre-treatment will prepare digestate streams for rapid and hassle-free downstream processing through reverse osmosis, evaporation, precipitation, or other liquid transformations.

By completely separating suspended solids, FMX can be applied to:

FMX Applications For Digestate

Nutrient Recovery

Prepare digestate for RO nutrient concentration by removing 100% of suspended solids in one step

The suspended-solid free permeate from FMX, which is rich in nitrogen and potassium, can be further refined by conventional RO or thermal concentration systems to produce liquid fertilizer and clean water for reuse or discharge.

Since most phosphorus in digestate exists in particulate form, the high-solids FMX concentrate can be used as a phosphorus rich soil amendment that is low in ammonia. This concentrate stream is flowable and pumpable for dragline applications.

Separating phosphorous and inorganic nitrogen will allow for total control over NPK application ratios in your field. No matter the amount of digestate produced, FMX will help meet nutrient management goals and avoid damaging crops. By reducing the volume of nutrient-rich digestate produced onsite, you can minimize storage costs during the winter season and increase livestock production independently of receiving farmlands.

FMX Applications For Digestate

Increase Biogas Production

CONCENTRATED SOLIDS FROM FMX CAN BOOST GAS PRODUCTION IN THE DIGESTOR

The reject from FMX is high suspended solids which still contains undigested organic matters. Our study has shown that the biogas production can be increased up to 25% by returning the reject to the front end of the anaerobic digester.
