INCREASE BIOGAS Production

Concentrated Solids from FMX Can Boost Gas Production in the Digestor

The reject from FMX is high suspended solids which still contains undigested organic matters. Our study has shown that the biogas production can be increased up to 25% by returning the reject to the front end of the anaerobic digester.

Project Overview

 t’Haantje BGP, Netherlands

A 6 MW co-digestion biogas plant in the Netherlands implemented FMX technology to recover and concentrate undigested organic matters from the digestate.

Goals

Recover most of organic matters and anaerobic microbials from the digester effluent and sent back for more biogas production and stable operation.

Challenges

High initial solid content and added coagulant rendered conventional membrane system inoperable.

Solution

The digestate is pre-treated with screw press to remove larger parties, then sent to FMX for further suspended solid removal. All suspended solids, which still contains valuable organic matters and rich in anaerobic bacteria, are rejected by FMX and sent back to the front end to be reconstituted and re-digestated.
